Protecting water sources that involve both surface water and groundwater is crucial.Water is required to be protected from contamination and measures for the same are required to be taken by individuals like you and us. We often end up neglecting the cause of protection of water sources, but, simple measures taken towards this will ensure healthy drinking water for everyone. Neglecting water sources can lead to their excessive contamination over the course of time and make drinking water unfit for consumption by people.
We’re taking you through easy sustainable ways that you can follow on an individual level and also on a community basis to ensure safe drinking water and uncontaminated healthy water sources for all-
Reduce the use of plastic -
Plastic is extremely difficult to break down. Majority of the plastic that’s discarded by humans goes to the water bodies where it decays the aquatic life. Reducing the use of plastic and reusing it will ensure less production of plastic and reduced wastage of it, thereby decreasing water contamination.
Stop the immersion of ashes and other waste items in water -
Immersion of ashes from dead bodies for religious faiths is a practice that must not be practiced. This solely aims at keeping the water bodies clean and free of harmful bacteria. Ashes adversely affect the water body and deteriorate water quality. Avoid dumping any kind of garbage or throwing litter nearby the water source or into it. As grown up educated individuals, let’s be informed to not pollute aimlessly our water sources.
Do not drain oils and chemicals down the basin -
If you’re in the habit of draining oil down your basin, then you must consider changing this practice immediately. Oils that are drained down the sink end up going to the water bodies and contaminating them ultimately.Similar to oil, other chemicals and liquid fertilisers or pesticides must also not be drained in the basin.Instead, collect these in a bottle and throw them in the garbage. Cleaning supplies etc. must find their place in the garbage and not your basin because waste from the basin ultimately goes to the water sources and contaminates it hazardously.
